4 Simple Ways To Get Started With Literacy Intervention

We know how overwhelming it can feel when a student is falling behind.

This guide is for you, whether you’re a parent, tutor, or support worker, even if you have no teaching background.

Each step tackles a common learning difficulty and offers clear, practical help. You don’t need to figure it all out on your own. We’ll walk you through what to do first and next, and each of our guides includes tips for reducing overwhelm and working at your student’s pace.

Whatever your starting point, every subscription includes all these tools and resources!

1: My student can’t read

Start here if your student is struggling with the basics of reading or if you’re not sure where to start.

The Literacy Support Kit will cover all the basic literacy skills in a step-by-step, structured sequence.
Get a formal assessment if you can — but don’t wait to start supporting your student. Jump in and get cracking, because the sooner they start, the sooner they will learn to read.

2: My student can read, but they can’t write

Handwriting shouldn’t hold them back.

The Handwriting Kit will take you step-by-step through teaching handwriting.

If your student lives with dysgraphia (or suspected dysgraphia) and they also struggle with spelling, we suggest you work through the Literacy Support Kit with them. If it’s pure handwriting support, you can use these resources on their own.

Resources that provide:

  • An intervention guide, so you know where to start
  • Pre-writing and confidence-building activities
  • Templates for learning and practising letter strokes in a logical order
  • Games, worksheets and activities for every letter in the alphabet

3: My student can read & write but they can't spell

A step-by-step approach to teaching spelling

The S.M.A.R.T. Spelling Kit will support you in teaching the skills every good speller needs.

A simple, structured way to teach spelling that breaks it into five key skills that are taught one at a time, in a clear and logical order. Students are shown how to think about spelling, not just guess or memorise.

Resources:

  • A framework and strategy for spelling that can be applied at any level
  • Sequenced activities, worksheets, and instructions you can apply to any student level within any program
  • Structured word lists for practising and applying the S.M.A.R.T. Spelling framework.

4: My student needs a morphology catch-up

Morphology is vital to reading, spelling, comprehension and vocabulary

The Morphology Kit will support you in teaching morphology, from the basics to advanced subject vocabulary.

Resources:

  • Diagnostic dictations to assess knowledge gaps.
  • A teaching sequence, lesson plans and resources for a comprehensive morphology catch-up.
  • A morphology training course to get you up to speed.
  • Excellent interactive morphology software with a built-in vocabulary library, lesson presets, and custom presets.
  • Physical manipulatives (purchase separately) to reinforce learning.
