LSK – Literacy Games

Literacy Games: Making Learning Fun and Engaging

Incorporating games into literacy instruction can transform the learning experience, making it engaging and enjoyable for students. Games provide a hands-on way to reinforce skills, build fluency, and foster confidence. The Literacy Support Kit (LSK) includes carefully designed games like Chunky Pig and a literacy-focused version of Snakes and Ladders, both aimed at supporting structured literacy programs. These games are perfect for consolidating phonics knowledge, practicing word recognition, and developing reading fluency—all in a relaxed, motivating environment.

Games help students by:

  • Encouraging repetition without monotony.
  • Providing opportunities to practice reading aloud.
  • Reducing anxiety around learning with a fun, interactive approach.
  • Catering to different learning styles with a balance of movement, visual cues, and auditory reinforcement.

Chunky Pig: Learning Blends and Chunks Through Play

The Chunky Pig Game is an exciting way to help students practice blends and word chunks while also encouraging strategic thinking. It combines phonics practice with a fun element of chance, motivating students to engage with literacy skills.

Objective

Be the first player to reach the end of the game board.

How to Play

  1. Spin the Spinner
Each player spins the spinner on their turn to determine their move.

  2. Move and Read

    • Start at the bottom left of the board and move left to right and up.
    • If the spinner lands on a blend or chunk (e.g., sp, st, sn, ip, et), move your piece to the next available square with that blend or chunk.
    • Say and read the blend or chunk out loud before moving.
  3. Bank or Spin Again

    • Players can keep spinning and moving as desired during their turn.
    • At any point, a player can say “Piggy bank” to end their turn safely and lock in their position on the board.
  4. Risk of Spinning “Pig”

    • If a player spins “pig” before banking, they lose all progress from that turn, and their turn ends immediately. The next player then takes their turn.

Winning

The first player to reach the end of the game board wins.

Why It Works

Chunky Pig encourages students to:

  • Recognize and practice reading blends and chunks.
  • Take calculated risks, fostering strategic thinking.
  • Engage in repeated practice without the pressure of formal instruction.

Snakes and Ladders: Building Fluency with High-Frequency Words

This literacy-focused version of the classic Snakes and Ladders game is perfect for practicing high-frequency words in a fun, interactive way. It blends familiar gameplay with targeted reading practice, making it ideal for small groups or one-on-one instruction.

Objective

Be the first player to reach the end of the game board.

How to Play

  1. Roll the Dice
Each player takes turns rolling a standard 1-6 dice.

  2. Move and Read

    • Move your game piece forward the number of spaces indicated by the dice.
    • Read the word on the square you land on out loud before continuing.
  3. Snakes and Ladders

    • Landing on a ladder allows the player to move up to the square it leads to, offering a quick boost forward.
    • Landing on a snake sends the player sliding down to the square it points to, creating a setback.

Winning

The first player to reach the final square on the board wins.

Why It Works

This version of Snakes and Ladders:

  • Reinforces high-frequency word recognition through repeated exposure.
  • Encourages reading aloud, which builds fluency.
  • Provides a low-pressure environment for practicing challenging words.

Tips for Success

To maximise the benefits of these games, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Provide gentle guidance if a student struggles with reading a word or selecting the correct blend, but allow them to make thoughtful choices independently.
  • Use the games as a fun complement to structured literacy lessons, particularly when introducing new phonemes or revising high-frequency words.
  • Encourage regular play to reinforce learning and boost fluency.
  • Celebrate progress and effort to build confidence and motivate further practice.
